What type of Laptop should I buy for my quilting needs?

Most quilting related programs, including Pro-Stitcher, are Windows programs and will not run on a MAC/Apple. Use this guide to purchase a laptop.

MK Quilt’s Recommendations for buying a PC

If you are buying from a store like Best Buy, Costco, or Staples you will likely get what you pay for.  The Handi Quilter software products (Pro-Stitcher and Designer) are Windows based applications and will run on almost any computer running the Microsoft Operating System: Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Must Haves

Windows 10 or 11

No Apple products

SSD (Storage) of at least 256 Gig

This is your C:\ internal storage.

Touch Screen

Most will have this.

Minimum 15.6” Screen

The 13” screens are ok for travel, but you will find it lacking for general PS use.

Minimum 8 gig RAM

Computer memory

Nice to Haves

Processor with a 5 or above in the name

Two primary companies make CPUs.

Intel: Core i3/i5/i7/i9

AMD: Ryzen 3/5/7/9

The ‘3s’ will work but are generally economy and will be slower

10-key on keyboard

Nice for numeric entry

Standard HDMI port

Easier to hook up to a TV

2-1 configuration (hinges)

Allows laptop to fold into tablet mode

Avoid

4K high resolution screens

Better picture, but unnecessary for most things.  Can lead to things appearing very small on the screen.

Note:  Unload the (not)free McAfee or Norton Anti-virus and just go with the included Windows security.  Repeatedly run the Windows Updates for the first two days and allow it to reboot several times to update the system.  Create a cloud-based/online MS account instead of just a local ID.
